Zangri Khangmar

Located east of the modern town of Zangri, Zangri Kharmar (The Red Citadel of the Copper Mountain) is a sacred meditation cave complex in central Tibet where Machik Labdrön (1055-1149) practiced taught and passed away, making it a pivotal site in the transmission of the Chö lineage.

The name is derived from the fact that the building was built upon a red rock, at the southern extremity of Zangri (the Copper Mountain), which overlooks the northern banks of the Yarlung Tsangpo. On the cliff-face to the west of the temple (which was destroyed in the 1960’s) is Machik Labdrön’s meditation cave.

Today it remains an important pilgrimage destination featuring a two-story temple housing relics of Machik Labdrön, and the practice of Chö continues to be actively maintained at this historic site.
